Unfortunately, there are loads of nooks and crannies for bacteria, germs, and debris to hide in, and that's how you get tonsil stones. When the bacteria and debris builds up, it forms tonsil stones in the crevices. The calcified stones can grow and multiply.

Most cases of viral tonsillitis clear up in a few days with fluids and plenty of rest. Antibiotics usually eliminate bacterial tonsillitis (strep throat) in about 10 days. Tonsillitis usually doesn't cause any serious or lasting health problems.

Post-nasal drip often leads to a sore, irritated throat. Although there is usually no infection, the tonsils and other tissues in the throat may swell. The occurance of tonsillitis is usually sudden and there are no pre-defined symptoms for it. Once you are infected with tonsils, you may feel sore or scratchy throat, pain and difficulty in swallowing. In case of acute tonsils, symptoms lasts for 2 to 4 days. In few patients, however, symptoms may last for 2 weeks. Another type is recurrent tonsillitis that comes several times a year in a patient.

People over 65 years of age are more prone towards severeal infections that could be serious at times. If tonsils are still occuring even if you are an adult, it is definitely a concerning situation.
